Sony has released its latest product Mocopi, a mobile motion capture kit that lets anyone make videos or operate avatars in real-time with devices including PC, VR headsets, and VR Chat. The device comes with a series of lightweight sensors connected to your body that lets you capture motion data with a smartphone app. The Mocopi is anticipated to last up to 10 hours and can fully charge in 1.5 hours via a USB-C charger, with sensors having both waterproof and dustproof properties. Reservations of the product will start in mid-December 2022 and will go on sale in late January 2023 with a price of 49,500 yen (about $358).

What to expect from the device?

Sony’s Mocopi mocap system uses six colored tracking devices, which people can wear on their bodies. The creator can place these devices on ankles, wrists, heads, and hips to capture and monitor real-time movements to control avatars. Each of these devices measures 32mm wide by 11.6mm thick and weighs close to 8 gm. The best thing yet about these devices is they are wireless and don’t require a base station. The design and characteristics make it an easily portable and versatile option for content creators.

The users need to pair up the Mocopi sensors through the app, which is available in Android and IOS versions. The sensors can be used to capture movements and input motion data, which you can either use to control your digital avatar in VR chat or export to your smartphone as motion data or mp4.

What are Sony’s plans with Mocopi?

Meta and Microsoft are already in the metaverse race offering VR headsets, while Sony is not just aiming metaverse market but possibly trying to get filmmakers and animators on the track. Sony has finally planned to release an SDK on December 15, allowing captured performance data to be imprinted into 3D animation programs. The software development kit (SDK) can help import the motion capture data to metaverse services and real-time development platform Unity, MotionBuilder, etc.

Sony believes that the SDK can expand the use of motion data for activities such as full-body tracking, promoting new services in areas such as the metaverse and fitness. Sony aims to target Virtual YouTubers, who may not have the budget for professional motion capture equipment, and has brought in a competitive price of 49,500 yen (around INR 29,500).
