LEVERAGING LEARNING WITH AR-BOOKS

The trends in education have been changing rapidly, and even more so with recent events linked to the Covid19 pandemic. In 2020 lectures, exams, seminars, and textbooks have been shifting into digital form more than ever before, and emerging technologies are becoming critical tools in this process. Given this, AR books are becoming a necessity, rather than merely an entertainment method.

Engaging students through distance learning presents a challenge for lectures. Taking advantage of AI, and immersive learning approach appears to be an adequate response to this problem. AR books offer practical learning opportunities in which students can interact with objects and have a real-world experience. Dull lectures are becoming more fun and learning has never been more engaging.

OBJECTIVE

The goal is to provide a solution for more efficient learning by creating an app that would serve as a facilitator for constructive, practical, and collaborative information sharing. This app integrates learning content and gives the possibility for seamless collaboration among students and teachers.

Students will be able to move objects, zoom in and out, and view them from various angles as the material is in 3D mode. AR-scannable software allows QR codes to be scanned and the material more deeply explored. Readers can also save and bookmark pages and return to them more easily later.

WHY USE AR BOOKS

When teaching methods are based exclusively on textbooks and standardized tests, it becomes difficult to teach students to be curious and use their imagination. Reading hundreds of pages and filling out standardized examinations, will hardly inspire students to be creative and ingenious. Educational organizations aiming to incorporate new and innovative technology into their teaching will enable learners to be imaginative and respond more effectively to tasks and assignments.

A study conducted by Educational Technology & Society in 2020 found that middle school students who used AR applications for studying had nearly 30% higher academic achievements than those who used traditional methods. This is a significant difference.

BENEFITS

Immersiveness

The conventional definition of education has been redesigned by three-dimensional objects. In traditional books pictures can be seen only from a single perspective. With AR apps students can see the items from all sides and disassemble it. This is highly significant for instance in understanding of complex mechanisms, anatomy, architecture etc.

More motivated students

AR books can turn any studying session into an exciting experience that will keep students involved and proactive to participate and find out how their reality during the lesson will be transformed. Reading a book can be a journey where learners explore a new world and look for all the “hidden” materials through interaction with a book itself.

Increased learning effectiveness

Especially when teaching abstract concepts, students may tend to lose focus. AR books encourage informal and self-directed learning, which gives students a sense of playfulness while studying serious topics. Additionally, this approach fosters skill-development. It gives the possibility to connect with the lesson on a deeper level and retrieve knowledge for a longer period of time.

Lower Costs

In the learning process, where realistic scenarios are difficult or costly to recreate, AR books can be used to construct simulations where students can develop their practical knowledge. By enhancing the quality of the learning process and offering the possibility of generating realistic simulations at a lower cost, AR technology would allow schools and universities to save money in the long run.

Safety

Learning new skills in practice can cause safety risks. With AR technology students can first learn and practice through the simulation of a real situation. For example, a medical student performing a heart surgery for the first time directly on a patient would be risky and with AR simulation this can be avoided.

Collabration

Through AR application students can work together with each other and communicate with the instructors. They can modify items and leave notes, which other participants will address later. This collaborative approach enhances productivity and teamwork.

Conclusion

By 2022, worldwide shipments of smart glasses are expected to reach 32.7 million units. The AR market is projected to reach $60.55 billion by 2023, expanding at a CAGR of 40.29 percent, and global demand for augmented reality is projected to increase dramatically to about $198 billion by 2025. With such huge growth, it is worth considering how our daily lives can be supported by AR.

The forthcoming Generation Alpha, born between 2010 and 2025 is considered to be the most technology-infused. In addition to this, since education moves online and is provided in a digital form as a result of a pandemic, AR education is becoming a standard rather than an exception. It is the real future of education.
